Biodesign Innovation Labs launches portable ventilator to deal with the coronavirus pandemic

Bengaluru-based startup: Biodesign Innovation Labs, has launched portable ventilators for coronavirus patients. But before we move forward to know more about this innovation, let us understand some common causes of Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Common Cold
A common viral infection of the nose and throat. In contrast to the flu, a common cold can be caused by many different types of viruses. The condition is generally harmless and symptoms usually resolve within two weeks.
Symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. High fever or severe symptoms are reasons to see a doctor, especially in children.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
A contagious and sometimes fatal respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus. SARS appeared in 2002 in China. It spread worldwide within a few months, although it was quickly contained. SARS is a virus transmitted through droplets that enter the air when someone with the disease coughs, sneezes, or talks. No known transmission has occurred since 2004.
Fever, dry cough, headache, muscle aches, and difficulty breathing are symptoms.
Upper Respiratory Infection
A common viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and airways. Upper respiratory tract infections usually resolve within seven to 10 days. Symptoms usually resolve within two weeks and include a scratchy or sore throat, sneezing, stuffy nose, and cough.
Pneumonia
Infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid. With pneumonia, the air sacs may fill with fluid or pus. The infection can be life-threatening to anyone, but particularly to infants, children and people over 65. Symptoms include a cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills and difficulty breathing.
Mers
A viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus. The Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a contagious, sometimes fatal respiratory illness. It’s often spread through close contact with an infected person.
Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Coronavirus causes respiratory distress in infected patients and has led to an increased need for ventilation infrastructure in India. At a time when many individuals and organizations are trying to help solve the crisis, Bengaluru-based startup Biodesign Innovation Labs is providing a portable ventilator to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
Biodesign’s Managing Director and CEO Gautham Pasupuleti said that hospitals and caretakers with limited resources often resort to manual ventilation using ‘AMBU bags’ which can lead to inconsistency in the ventilation parameters and exhaustion.
Biodesign was founded in 2017. The main aim of this innovation lab is to provide low-cost ventilation services in India.
“Our device fits into a situation where hospitals can use it in ambulances and emergency wards to stabilize the patient. The device provides intermittent positive pressure ventilation and delivers specific breath rate as set by the clinician or a paramedic. It can provide ventilation appropriately and stabilize the patient,” Gautham said.
The demand for the Product
“We have done a few pilots which has generated a huge demand for the product. For example, a Kerala distributor is asking us to provide 1,000 ventilators,” Gautham said.
